Potassium Iodide (KI) protects your thyroid during a nuclear emergency and inhibits your risk of developing thyroid cancer further down the road. KI saturates your thyroid with safe iodine, leaving little, if any, opportunity for the radioactive iodine to do any damage - no damage means no threat of cancer.
